Lash Artist Income: What Can You Expect to Make?

So how much do lash artists really make?

Long story short: it TOTALLY depends.

Most lash artists are also small business owners, meaning that they set their own hours, work schedule, pricing, and more. That means there's a wide variety in lash artist income.

For most artists who are five days a week, taking three clients per day, income ranges between $75,000 to $150,000 per year.

But, there are a number of factors that can affect that number, like:

  • Your level of experience: More experienced artists can charge more. They will make it on the higher end of the spectrum.
  • Your clientele: Who are your clients? Are they stay-at-home-moms with more disposable income? If so, you can charge more. If your clients are college students, your prices are probably lower.
  • Your location: Artists in big cities typically charge more than artists in small towns or more remote suburbs.
  • Your studio: Do you own your own studio? Or are you working under the umbrella of a bigger business? Is your studio designed to offer a luxurious experience for your clients? Or is it bare bones?

All of these can affect your ability to earn as a lash artist.

If you feel like you're at the lower end of that salary spectrum (or if you just want to get closer to that upper limit), here are some ways you can increase your income.

How To Increase Your Lash Artist Income

One of the best ways to increase your lash artist income is just to keep lashing! The longer you work, the more experienced you'll be… and the more you can charge. In the meantime, here are other ways you can increase your lash artist income.

#1: Increase Your Prices

Many lash artists think that to earn more money, they have to take on more clients.

Wrong!

Instead of trading more time for more money, trade more money for the same time.

Think of it this way: say your typical lash appointment is two hours long and costs $100 (we'll use a nice round number to make it easy).

  • If you do 3 appointments per day, you'll earn $300 that day for 6 hours of work.
  • If you stretch to 4 appointments per day, you'll earn $400 for 8 hours of work.
  • If, however, you increase your prices by $20 per appointment, you'll earn $360 for 6 hours of work.

You're earning almost as much money for 25% less time.

Yes, please!

Now, it's not as simple as raising your prices. In fact, you may be thinking "But, if I charge more money for my appointments, won't I lose customers?"

The answer is yes—you may lose some customers if you increase your prices. But, if you increase your prices the right way (notifying your existing clients ahead of time, explaining your reasoning, etc.), you won't lose very many.

Say you lose 2 customers per month. Will the increase in prices make up for them? Do the math and see what happens.

(Spoiler alert: you'll be totally fine!)

#2: Update Your Service Offerings

One of the best ways to earn more as a lash artist is to increase your skills. The longer you lash, the more you'll be able to charge.

That being said, you can also learn new techniques that allow you to charge more.

  • If you are only doing classic lashes right now, consider offering volume, which costs more per session.
  • Already offering volume? Upgrade to mega volume!

With each service upgrade, you'll be able to charge more.

Learning new techniques is like pouring accelerant on your experience level. It allows you to improve quickly and charge more.

#3: Provide Optional Add-ons

A lash appointment is the perfect opportunity to do some other beauty work. Think about easy add-ons that you can offer, like a lip mask or hydrating under eye gel pads

These services are great because they don't cost you or your client any more time. But, they do add more dollar value to the overall appointment.

You'd be surprised at how many people are willing to pay a few extra bucks for an add-on!

#4: Offer Retail Product Sales

If you're not offering retail product sales, you're missing out on a huge potential income source!

You can easily sell your clients on aftercare products to keep their lashes fluffy and clean (clean lashes = long-lasting lashes) as well as lash care serum to encourage healthy natural lash growth.

If you buy lash products in bulk, you can sell them to your lash clients at a small profit. At the very least, they'll save on shipping by purchasing in your studio rather than online.

The more luxurious your lash studio environment is, the more you'll be able to charge your clients.
